The Cathedral

Peeking out above the Civitas hills is the Cathedral of Matera With  its sixteen spoke rose window, which resembles an observing eye wanting to protect the entire population, it offers a wonderful view of the Sasso Barisano. Here,  Romanesque and Baroque pursue and mingle with each other, giving the cathedral its special identity. Inside you can admire the famous stone nativity from 1534, the sarcophagus containing the remains of St. John, and the fresco of the Madonna della Bruna with child, protector of the city. An inscription triumphs on the bell tower, defining  the church as the “house that delights the eye”. No statement could better describe what this place instills.
