The Seduction of stone

The Sassi of Matera often change color. At dawn, they reflect typical Mediterranean nuances.  At sunset, they seem to merge with the sky. Here the atmosphere has stopped, the air is suspended. The only example  of a rupestrian settlement worldwide, the Sassi of Matera is one of the oldest cities in the world, fully carved in the rock. Walking among the rock dwellings, through the quarters of Caveoso, Barisano, and Civita, it is wonderful to stop and admire the old ovens, and the deep cisterns used to collect water. Everything seems to have remained in its place, motionless, as proof of a past life that is, yet, still alive. Visiting Matera means, in some manner,  retracing the path of man, from the beginning to the present. The rocks, omnipresent, diverse, strong, and seductive are the soul of this pearl of Lucania.
